DIATOMS
This collage comes out of a 2021 artist residency awarded to Artist, Dee Etzwiler, by the Science Museum of Minnesota. During her residency, Dee worked with scientists from the St. Croix Watershed Research Station (SCWRS) who study diatoms (single-celled algae with silica cell walls) that are obtained from lake floor core samples. Diatoms are indicators of lake health and climate change. Dee’s abstract collage incorporates copyright-free images of diatoms, excerpts from a scientist's field notebook, and field notebook textures. Colors and other texures were also added to this piece.
