RESIDENCIES: Focusing on Nature & Science to Create Informative Art

Artist, Dee Etzwiler, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Architecture. In addition to creating custom works of art for her clients, Dee’s rich background has also given her a deep interest in pursuing artist residencies that offer her the chance to focus on producing abstract works of art that reflect current scientific research, as well as creating art that expresses our natural world. Dee hopes her residency work inspires and informs others of the world around us. Artist residencies also provide opportunities for Dee to deeply explore her technical and artistic skills. In the fall of 2022, Dee attended a Ucross Foundation Artist Residency located on a historic 20,000-acre ranch in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming. Her abstract work during this residency focused on Dr. Jackie Canterbury’s ornithology research that led to the 2015 Audubon designation of an Important Bird Area on Ucross land.

In 2021, Dee attended a 3-week Artist at Pine Needles residency that was sponsored by the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) and took place on the banks of Minnesota’s St. Croix River. Her art focused on research work conducted by scientists from the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, an SMM facility located 30 miles northeast of St. Paul, MN.

In 2019, Dee was also accepted to an artist residency at the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts in Wyoming but this program closed in 2020 due to COVID-19. Dee was unable to attend this residency where she was planning on artistically document the flora and fauna of Brush Creek’s surrounding environment.
